If a retailer is delivering a new mattress, ask about California’s no-additional-charge take-back requirement first. If there is no delivery, the mattress is upstairs, or several bulky items need to go together, a full-service pickup may be the simpler route.
Compare the three common options
| Option | Works well when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Retailer take-back | A new mattress is being delivered | Timing, condition requirements, and whether the frame or extra items are excluded |
| Program drop-off | You can safely transport the mattress | Location, hours, quantity limits, and accepted condition |
| Full-service pickup | You need in-home removal or have other bulky items | Access, labor, volume pricing, and destination |
CalRecycle oversees California’s Mattress Stewardship Program, which is operated by the Mattress Recycling Council. State law requires a retailer delivering a new mattress to offer pickup of a used mattress at no additional charge. That option can be excellent, but it may not cover bed frames, unrelated furniture, extra mattresses, or a separate-day cleanout.
Measure the exit path
Measure the mattress, stair width, door openings, and tight turns. Strip bedding and clear small furniture from the route. Do not fold an innerspring mattress unless the manufacturer says it is designed to fold. Tell the pickup team about adjustable bases, split foundations, elevators, parking restrictions, or known contamination before scheduling.
Condition changes the answer
Wet, heavily soiled, or infested mattresses may be rejected by reuse and recycling programs. Do not wrap a mattress in a way that hides a known condition. Describe it accurately and ask for the receiving program’s packaging instructions. If bed bugs are suspected, avoid moving the item through shared halls until the removal plan is confirmed.
What to tell a pickup provider
- Mattress size and count
- Box spring, foundation, or adjustable base
- Floor level and stair or elevator access
- Parking distance and gate access
- Known stains, moisture, pests, or damage
- Other furniture that should be quoted in the same load
Junk Dawgs’ mattress removal service is an option when you need the lifting and hauling handled. A precise description helps the team prepare an accurate on-site assessment.
