Make five zones before you book a haul: keep, give away, sell, remove, and special handling. The fifth zone—paint, chemicals, batteries, fuels, and similar materials—prevents hazardous items from disappearing into an ordinary junk pile.

Work by surface, not by sentiment

Start with one shelf, cabinet, or wall at a time. Moving every box into the driveway creates a bigger decision problem and can block access. Label containers with the next action, not vague categories. “Give to Maria,” “City HHW,” and “haul” are easier to finish than “maybe.”

The five-zone test

  1. Keep: it has a current use and a real storage location.
  2. Give away: a specific person or organization accepts it in its current condition.
  3. Sell: list it with a deadline; move it to removal if the deadline passes.
  4. Remove: ordinary bulky items and non-hazardous clutter approved for pickup.
  5. Special handling: paint, cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, propane, batteries, e-waste, sharps, or unknown containers.

Redlands household hazardous waste is a separate trip

The current City of Redlands and San Bernardino County materials list a household hazardous-waste collection location at the Redlands City Yard, 500 Kansas Street at Park Avenue, on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Rules and hours can change, so verify before loading your vehicle. Keep products in original, closed containers when possible and follow the program’s transport limits and residency requirements.

Do not put mystery containers in the haul pile.

If a label is missing, a container is leaking, or materials have reacted, leave the area undisturbed and call the local program or fire department guidance line for safe next steps.

Questions that make the quote more useful

  • Is the load staged in the garage, or does it include attic and indoor areas?
  • Are there stairs, a steep driveway, or a long carry?
  • Which large items need disassembly?
  • Are appliances, electronics, mattresses, concrete, or tires included?
  • Has every chemical, battery, and fuel container been separated?
  • Should shelves or storage systems stay in place?

Once the special-handling pile is out of scope, Junk Dawgs can assess the remaining garage cleanout. You still keep control of every decision; the crew handles the approved lifting, loading, and haul-away.
